Processes involving manufacture, use or evolution of carbon disulphide and hydrogen sulphide (fume process)

A dangerous operation declared under Section 87 of the Factories Act 1948 — Rule 114(1) item 14 · Schedule XIV.

Medical surveillance (statutory)

Sch XIV para 13: everyone in a fume process examined by the Factory Medical Officer once in every six months AND by the Certifying Surgeon once in every 12 months, on the premises. Health Register in Form 7; air-analysis register; no one in the fume-process room during meal/rest intervals; no re-employment after suspension without sanction.

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Carbon disulphide (CS₂) and hydrogen sulphide (H₂S)

Health effects: CS₂ — psychosis, polyneuropathy, vascular/cardiac and reproductive toxicity; H₂S — acute asphyxiation, eye/respiratory irritation.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: Enclosure/LEV; continuous H₂S detection and alarms; air-monitoring register; confined-space controls; exclusion during rest breaks.

PPE: Supplied-air/respiratory protection for entry and high-exposure tasks; gas monitor; chemical-resistant gloves; eye protection.
