Hazard & health effects

Agent: Metal/abrasive grinding dust (free silica from wheels); abrasive-wheel fragments

Health effects: Pneumoconiosis/silicosis; eye and laceration injury from wheel burst or flying particles.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: Effective exhaust draught at each wheel; competent-person 6-monthly testing of dust-extraction plant; wheel guarding and correct mounting.

PPE: Eye/face protection (goggles/visor); dust respirator; gloves.
