Medical surveillance (statutory)

Sch III para 15: examined by the Certifying Surgeon within 7 days before/after first employment, and thereafter once in every calendar month (or other interval the Chief Inspector specifies). Health Register in Form 7; no re-employment after suspension without the CS's written sanction.

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Lead and lead oxides (lead process); sulphuric acid mist

Health effects: Plumbism — anaemia, abdominal colic, peripheral neuropathy (wrist-drop), encephalopathy, nephropathy, reproductive harm.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: LEV on pasting/oxide handling/melting; wet methods; segregated eating areas; no dry sweeping; blood-lead biological monitoring.

PPE: Respirator for lead dust/fume; gloves, on-site-laundered overalls; acid-resistant PPE for formation; eye protection.
