Medical surveillance (statutory)

Sch VI paras 7–8: examined by a Certifying Surgeon within 14 days of first employment and thereafter at intervals of not more than three months; if fit, special certificate of fitness in Form 23 (kept by the manager). Health Register in Form 7; suspended until re-examined fit. [Interval conflict — see notes.]

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Lead and lead compounds (lead process)

Health effects: Plumbism — anaemia, colic, neuropathy, encephalopathy, nephropathy, reproductive harm.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: LEV/enclosure on melting and dust/fume steps; wet processes; blood-lead biological monitoring; no dry sweeping; segregated eating.

PPE: Respiratory protection for lead dust/fume; on-site-laundered coveralls, gloves; eye protection.
