Medical surveillance (statutory)

Sch II para 7: examined by the Medical Inspector of Factories or Certifying Surgeon within 30 days of first employment; if fit, certificate of fitness in Form 23; thereafter at intervals of not more than six months. Twice-weekly inspection of hands/forearms recorded in Health Register (Form 7). [Form/interval conflict — see notes.]

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Chromic acid / hexavalent chromium; acid mist

Health effects: Chrome ulcers, nasal septum ulceration/perforation, allergic dermatitis, asthma; Cr(VI) is a lung carcinogen.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: Push-pull / lateral-draught LEV over plating tanks; tank-edge exhaust; mist suppressants; barrier creams; washing facilities.

PPE: Acid-resistant gloves/gauntlets, apron, boots; chemical splash goggles/face shield; respiratory protection for mist.
