Manufacture or manipulation of nitro or amino compounds

A dangerous operation declared under Section 87 of the Factories Act 1948 — Rule 114(1) item 11 · Schedule XI.

Medical surveillance (statutory)

Sch XI para 15: (1) employed only if found fit by the appointed doctor on appropriate tests, re-examined by the appointed doctor at intervals of not more than three months; (2) also examined by a Certifying Surgeon within 30 days of first employment (if fit, certificate in Form 23, carry token), thereafter by the CS at intervals of not more than twelve months. X-ray arrangements required.

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Aromatic nitro/amino compounds (aniline, nitrobenzene, TNT); some aromatic amines are bladder carcinogens

Health effects: Methaemoglobinaemia/cyanosis, toxic anaemia and hepatitis, dermatitis; bladder carcinoma (carcinogenic amines).

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: Closed systems; LEV; skin-absorption control (these absorb through skin); decontamination before vessel entry; biological monitoring.

PPE: Chemical-resistant impervious gloves/suit (skin protection critical); respiratory protection; eye protection.
