Medical surveillance (statutory)

Sch XVIII para 7: everyone in a manganese process examined by the Medical Inspector / Certifying Surgeon within 14 days of first employment and thereafter at intervals of not more than six months; if fit, certificate of fitness; record in Health Register Form 7. Para 6: appointed doctor does the pre-employment exam and examines at intervals not exceeding three months. [Form 23/32 conflict — see notes.]

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Manganese dust and fume

Health effects: Manganism — Parkinsonism-like extrapyramidal CNS toxicity; manganese pneumonitis; respiratory effects.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: LEV/enclosure on dust/fume steps; wet methods; air monitoring; neurological screening; housekeeping.

PPE: Respiratory protection for manganese dust/fume; coveralls, gloves; eye protection.
