Medical surveillance (statutory)

Sch XXII para 15: examined by the Medical Inspector / Certifying Surgeon within 14 days of first employment (including exfoliative urine cytology); no work beyond 14 days unless certified fit; re-examined at least once in every six calendar months (again including urine cytology); certificate of fitness in Form 23 and record in Form 7. Para 16: appointed doctor re-examines at intervals of not more than 3 months; weekly air estimation of prohibited substances; no fee to the worker.

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Carcinogenic dye intermediates (aromatic amines, e.g. benzidine, beta-naphthylamine)

Health effects: Urinary bladder carcinoma (long latency) — the basis for urine-cytology screening.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: Closed systems / substitution and prohibition of the most potent amines; LEV; weekly workroom air estimation; urine-cytology surveillance; decontamination.

PPE: Impervious chemical-resistant gloves/suit (skin protection critical); respiratory protection; eye protection.
