Medical surveillance (statutory)

Sch X para 14: everyone in a chrome process examined by the Certifying Surgeon once in every calendar month (or other interval specified), on the premises. Health Register in Form 7; an appointed practitioner treats chrome ulcerations on the premises (thrice weekly); no re-employment after suspension without the CS's written sanction; X-ray arrangements required.

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Chromic acid / bichromates (hexavalent chromium)

Health effects: Chrome ulceration, nasal septum perforation, dermatitis, respiratory irritation; lung carcinogen.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: LEV/enclosure; mist/dust suppression; daily hand/feet inspection; barrier creams; prompt ulcer treatment; washing facilities.

PPE: Acid/chromate-resistant gloves, apron, boots; goggles/face shield; respiratory protection.
