Medical surveillance (statutory)

Sch XV para 13: employed only if examined by the Certifying Surgeon within 7 days before first employment and certified fit; re-examined by the CS at least once in every three calendar months. Health Register in Form 7; Chief Inspector may order clinical tests (e.g. blood cholinesterase); an appointed practitioner examines handlers for over-absorption at least weekly.

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Dangerous pesticides/insecticides (organophosphate, organochlorine, carbamate)

Health effects: Cholinesterase inhibition (OP/carbamate) — cholinergic crisis; neurotoxicity; chronic systemic effects.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: Closed/automated formulation and filling; LEV; cholinesterase biological monitoring; decontamination and washing; spill control.

PPE: Chemical-resistant gloves/suit/boots; respiratory protection; face/eye protection; aprons.
