Medical surveillance (statutory)

Not specified in the rule — Sch XII prescribes impervious flooring/drainage, handling/transport devices, storage/labelling, washing/flooding facilities, cautionary notices and yearly examination of containers/pipelines (engineering only). General s.41C / periodic exam applies.

Hazard & health effects

Agent: Strong acids/alkalis (H₂SO₄, HNO₃, HCl, HF, phosphoric, carbolic; chlorine, bromine, ammonia, caustic soda/potash)

Health effects: Chemical burns, dermatitis, eye injury, respiratory-tract irritation; HF causes deep/systemic burns.

Controls & PPE

Engineering controls: Impervious flooring and drainage; enclosed transfer; emergency showers/eyewash; labelling and segregation; annual examination of containers and pipelines.

PPE: Acid/alkali-resistant gloves, apron, boots; chemical splash goggles/face shield; respiratory protection for vapours/gases.
