A hazardous process listed in the First Schedule to the Factories Act 1948 (s.2(cb)).
Typical industries: Thermal (coal/oil/gas) power stations, captive power plants.
Principal hazards
- Coal/fly-ash dust
- Heat and high-pressure steam
- Noise (turbines/mills)
- Asbestos in legacy lagging
- Electrical hazards; SO2/NOx flue gases
Health effects
Pneumoconiosis, heat stress and burns/scalds, noise-induced hearing loss, asbestosis (legacy), electric shock, respiratory irritation.
Key engineering controls
Enclosed ash handling with LEV/wet suppression; lagging and acoustic enclosures; steam-line insulation and pressure-relief; LOTO (lock-out/tag-out); flue-gas treatment; asbestos register and controlled removal.
