Paints and Pigment Industries
A hazardous process listed in the First Schedule to the Factories Act 1948 (s.2(cb)).
Typical industries: Paint, varnish, lacquer and pigment manufacture.
Principal hazards
- Solvent vapours (toluene, xylene, ketones)
- Lead, chromate and cadmium pigments
- Isocyanates (PU paints); titanium dioxide and pigment dust
- Flammable solvents
Health effects
Solvent neurotoxicity/'painters' syndrome, lead and chromate toxicity (including cancer), isocyanate-induced asthma, dermatitis, fire/explosion injury.
Key engineering controls
Enclosed/automated dispersion and filling with LEV; solvent-vapour extraction and recovery; substitution of lead/chromate pigments and toward water-based systems; flame-proof areas; isocyanate air monitoring.
PPE
- Organic-vapour and isocyanate-rated (air-fed) respirators
- Chemical gloves and aprons
- Goggles/face shields
- Anti-static FR clothing
- Safety boots
