Fermentation Industries (Distilleries and Breweries)
A hazardous process listed in the First Schedule to the Factories Act 1948 (s.2(cb)).
Typical industries: Alcohol distilleries, breweries, industrial-fermentation units.
Principal hazards
- Carbon dioxide accumulation (fermentation vessels - asphyxiant)
- Ethanol vapour (flammable)
- Caustic CIP chemicals
- Heat/steam; confined-space entry; grain dust
Health effects
CO2 asphyxiation/sudden collapse, fire/flash burns from ethanol, caustic burns, scalds, grain-dust respiratory effects.
Key engineering controls
CO2/oxygen monitoring and forced ventilation before vessel entry; confined-space permit system; flammable-vapour control and bonding/earthing; CIP chemical handling controls; tank purging.
