Dimethylformamide (DMF) — biological monitoring
When to suspect: Acrylic-fibre spinning, polyurethane & synthetic-leather coating, pharma/pesticide synthesis solvent, printing inks, lacquers. Marked dermal absorption; hepatotoxic; alcohol intolerance is a clue.
Urinary N-methylformamide (total NMF) (mg/L)
| Level | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Negative | Non-exposed (exposure-derived metabolite) |
| 15 | ACGIH BEI — NMF, end of shift |
| 40 | ACGIH BEI — AMCC, prior to last shift of workweek |
Significant skin absorption — biomonitoring (not just air) matters.
Biological exposure index
ACGIH BEI: total NMF 15 mg/L (end of shift); AMCC 40 mg/L (prior to last shift of workweek).
Basis: ACGIH BEI.
Sample collection & preparation
- Spot urine, end-of-shift; plain container; FREEZE (NMF/HMMF unstable at room temp).
- Note alcohol-intolerance history.
Statutory basis. Factories Act 1948 sets only AIR limits (Second Schedule TWA/STEL, s.41F) and mandates the hazardous-process exam (s.41C, ≤12-monthly); it gives NO blood/urine values. The ranges below are ACGIH BEI / OSHA / clinical benchmarks (India has not adopted biological limits into law).
